En accord with your true essence, or how to cleanse wisely   

I am sharing with you a gentle (but efficient!) 5-day Ayurvedic cleanse. This cleanse uses Ayurvedic principles and is ideal for anyone willing to feel more in tune with their true essence, without losing the energy necessary to go on about their life.

Gentle 5 day Ayurvedic cleanse

Day 1

Eat freshly cooked vegetarian food. Pass on the sugar, gluten and alcohol (not forever, you can do it!). Replace coffee and caffeinated beverages (coke, redbull, tea) with herbal tea. Add 3 big glasses of water to the amount of water you would normally drink.

Day 2, Day 3 and Day 4

Morning

Get up with the sunrise.

Scrape your tongue (ancient practice that facilitates detoxification by removing toxins accumulated overnight on the tongue – you can find U-shaped tongue scrapers online and in health food shops).

Brush your teeth.

Drink ginger water (recipe below).

Move gently and mindfully: go to a yoga class, go for a walk, go for a swim…

Meditate or journal.

Shower and drink ginger water.

If hungry, eat kitchari but try to hold on till lunchtime as this will give your digestive system a rest - especially on Day 1.

 

Midday

Pause.

Eat warm kitchari slowly.

Rest after your meal.

 

Afternoon

When the 3pm sweet craving hits, drink ginger water.

Meditate or journal or go for a short walk outside to take deep breaths.

 

Evening

At least 4 hours after lunch and 1 to 2 hours before going to bed.

Eat warm kitchari slowly.

Rest.

Prepare yourself for the following day (pack your bags, choose your clothes, etc.)

Scrap your tongue, brush your teeth and clean your face, hands and feet.

Try winding down by lighting candles, listening to soft music, do a few yin poses…

Go to bed before 10pm.  

 

Day 5 and beyond

Eat freshly cooked vegetarian food. Pass on the sugar, gluten and alcohol (reserve these for when you feel like celebrating!).

Replace coffee and caffeinated beverages with herbal tea. Have the caffeinated drink you like only as a treat.

Drink 2/3 litres of water at room temperature each day but try to leave 30min before/after meals for the digestive system to function best.

Do things you love, with love! Don’t entertain negativity, and believe in yourself!

HOW TO…

Ginger water

Serve 1

1 cup of hot water

½ tbs of dry ginger

Add ginger to hot water and stir well. Add raw honey in the morning.

 

Kitchari

Serve 4

Ingredients (prefer organic produce)

2 cups of yellow mung beans

1 cup of quinoa

12 cups of water

3 cups of finely chopped vegies (use easy to digest vegetables like leafy greens, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower)

2 Tbsp. grated ginger

2 Tbsp. mustard seeds

1 Tbsp. turmeric powder

2 Tbsp. ghee (clarified butter)

Fresh coriander bunch

Salt & White pepper

 

Method

Soak beans and quinoa in water overnight. Rinse before cooking.

In a heavy bottomed saucepan, heat the ghee on low flame. Add mustard seeds until they pop.

Add ginger, turmeric and stir well. Add beans and quinoa, stir then add water.

Let it simmer for 15 minutes, then add vegies, salt and pepper. Let it cook for 20 minutes, check and stir occasionally. Add water if necessary.

 

Khichari should be cooked thoroughly to a buttery consistency.

Add ghee and a few leaves of fresh coriander to taste.
